The Clio Project: Dreams & Fantasies

  • St. James’ Church Sussex Gardens London, England, W2 3UD United Kingdom (map)

I am excited to join The Clio Project for their upcoming programme! From the project:

Join us for an evening filled with vivid and kaleidoscopic orchestral colours as we explore the magic of storytelling through monumental masterpieces by Mendelssohn, Debussy and Tchaikovsky, as well as a world premiere by Jan Pospíšil. Whether you're a fan of comedies, myths and legends or romantic tragedies, there's something here for every dreamer.

Illusion or reality? Asleep or awake? Both Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture & Scherzo and Debussy's Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune share this ambiguity in the setting of a mystical forest. The former uses this confusion to explore the comedy and ridiculous nature of love, whilst the latter expresses erotic love through the faun’s lust and longing for nymphs. Jan Pospíšil’s Daydreams is a farewell love letter to London combining lush romantic lines inspired by Debussy juxtaposed with light playful sparks, similar to Mendelssohn. Finally, returning to Shakespeare through Tchaikovsky’s lens, Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture ends the programme with love’s tragedy.
